£80m private hospital unit to set a benchmark for future cancer services
CANCER services are set to enter a new era with the opening this week of the largest new build project in the private healthcare sector for the past 30 years - an £80m state-of-the-art oncology unit in the heart of the capital.
Lead contractor, Shepherd Construction, recently handed over The London Clinic's latest facility located in Harley Street, the heart of London's private medicine sector.

The new centre is a flagship for the future of cancer services

The final phase of the ambitious project, which is expected to become a benchmark for future cancer services both within the NHS and the private sector, took 84 weeks to complete, providing 47 individual bedrooms and 22 day care pods. The scheme also included refurbishing the existing grade II listed building to provide consulting rooms.

The building has a total of eight storeys, three of which are underground, and features one of the deepest basements in the city at 16m, constructed by the McGee Group.

The basement houses a radiation therapy bunker housing the very latest in cancer treatment technology including the Cyberknife robotic radiosurgery device. The walls of the bunker have been specified with Ledite instead of concrete as, while Ledite is twice as dense, it takes up less physical space, a key consideration due to the limitations of the building.

Shepherd Construction's sister company, SES, handled all M&E services installation including chillers, fans, heating and ventilation as well as vast amounts of wiring and pipework to both the treatment areas and patient rooms.

Many of the M&E services were prefabricated off-site including risers, corridor and bedroom modules, which were manufactured by PRISM, SES's prefabrication facility, and transported to the site where they were lifted into place using cranes.

Our new centre will provide renewed hope and optimism for cancer patients and their families and will help put the UK back on the cancer map
The largest independently-owned hospital in the country, the new build project was designed with patients in mind, offering spacious, light-filled rooms. Infection control has also been a key consideration with the building boasting touch-screen technology and automatic doors to cut down on the possibility for cross contamination.

Richard Vining, Shepherd Construction's managing director, told BBH: "We are delighted to be able to hand over this new development. It has been an extremely intricate project necessitating carefully-planned logistics to ensure deliveries and movement around such a tight site in a busy area were as smooth as possible."

Malcolm Miller, chief executive of The London Clinic, added: "This is a very exciting time for us and our patients, as well as for the future of cancer treatment and care. Our new centre will provide renewed hope and optimism for cancer patients and their families and will help put the UK back on the cancer map."
