£75m mental health facility to open in May
THE first phase of a £75m scheme to revamp St Luke's Hospital in Middlesbrough has been completed, with a new mental health facility expected to open in May.

Developer, John Laing, announced this week it had completed phase one of the Roseberry Park development on behalf of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

The PFI redevelopment is a key component of the trust’s modernisation of mental health and learning disability services, with the Roseberry Park project believed to be the largest mental health scheme in the UK in recent years.

The facility covers 27,000sq m and will provide 312 inpatient beds and activity and recreational space.

Building work first started on the site in December 2007 and following enabling works the main project began in January 2008, with completion earlier this month, ready for a phased occupation at the end of April. Phase two of the works, which will involve demolishing the trust’s existing building and landscaping the surrounding area, is due to be completed by next spring.

The facility was procured under a 30-year contract with service provider, John Laing Integrated Services (JLIS), which will provide 24-hour help desk services, estates and utilities management, grounds and garden maintenance, car parking and security and restaurant services.

Mike White, project director for John Laing, said: “This project truly captures the needs of the trust and the changing way in which clinical services are being delivered to its patients. The settings are fresh, light, welcoming and safe and they provide an environment conducive to healing, promoting a sense of well-being to patients and visitors. The journey has been one of cohesive work supported by strong relationships between ourselves, the trust, building contractor and service provider.”

The new hospital has been named Roseberry Park after the iconic local landmark of Roseberry Topping, which overlooks Middlesbrough and the surrounding area.

John Ord, associate director of PFI projects at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Roseberry Park is a key part of the trust’s plans to fundamentally modernise the way we provide services and is the penultimate capital development of a long-term investment strategy. The building work has been completed on time and to budget and we are now putting the finishing touches to the hospital before it welcomes its first patients. The completed facility is truly impressive and has been designed to complement the excellent clinical care we provide.”
