Work starts on £14m health centre in Stoke-on-Trent
AN OFFICIAL turf-cutting ceremony marked the start of work on a new community health centre in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent.
The £14m health facility was designed by One Creative Environments and will be built by Prima 200 under the Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) procurement programme. The first turf is cut, paving the way for the new Cobridge Community Health Centre The services will be split across two new buildings; both shaped to reflect the local urban landscape and designed to be sympathetic to the Victorian Christ Church situated nearby. The site will also benefit from extensive landscaping and planting to provide additional green environmental space in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent and each of the buildings will incorporate a range of environmental features to maximise their efficiency and minimise waste. Campbell Boyle, chairman of Prima 200, said: “We will be working closely with our partners to ensure the health centre is a really striking buildings and its build is in keeping with the characteristics of the nearby church.” Graham Urwin, chief executive of NHS Stoke-on-Trent, added: “It is fantastic to see work start after so much planning. Three GP practices will be based here with a patient list of 11,000. A whole range of services will also operate from the centre, which means people will no longer have to travel to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire to access them. We expect around 100,000 people will use the centre every year.” Cobridge Community Health Centre will be the 10th new building that Prima 200 has delivered in north Staffordshire and the sixth with NHS Stoke-on-Trent under the LIFT programme. Work is expected to be completed in late summer 2011.
